A new standard has been approved for "green" cosmetics.

Cosmetic

A unified and mandatory set of criteria has been developed, clearly defining which cosmetics can be labeled as "natural" or "organic." This will protect consumers from fraud and increase trust in the entire segment.

The Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology has approved a new preliminary national standard, PNST 1030-2025 "Natural and Organic Cosmetics: General Criteria for Verifying the Validity of Environmental Claims." This standard was developed by the Autonomous Non-Profit Organization "Russian Quality System" under the relevant Technical Committee TC 708 "Environmental Labeling."

The main goal of the standard is to prevent misleading environmental claims, also known as greenwashing. From now on, manufacturers must adhere to clearly defined criteria in order to use labels such as "natural" or "organic." The standard establishes the minimum percentage of ingredients of natural and organic origin that must be present in the product formulation.

Moreover, the new rules apply not only to the composition of products but also to their entire life cycle. For example, the standard includes requirements for production processes, such as reducing resource consumption and implementing environmental management systems. This means that the terms "natural" and "organic" will reflect not only the product formula but also its environmental impact.

For consumers, this translates into easier decision-making and increased trust. Compliance with the new standard will serve as a reliable guide, guaranteeing that the claims on packaging match the actual properties of the product. For the market, it establishes common ground rules that will help distinguish truly "green" products from ordinary ones and create conditions for fair competition and the development of the eco-friendly segment.

Thus, the new standard serves as a common language for manufacturers, retailers, and consumers, fostering honest communication and promoting sustainable development principles within the industry.
