Saint Petersburg supports the development of pharmaceutical and other high-tech industries by providing engineering-ready sites and ensuring a favorable investment climate. This was reported by Saint Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov during a joint visit with the President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, to the pharmaceutical company "Vertex" at the Novoorsklovskaya site. They familiarized themselves with the company's product range, including life-saving medicines and cosmetic products, as well as toured the production workshops and packaging line.

During the visit, the parties discussed prospects for developing cooperation between the pharmaceutical industries of St. Petersburg and Cuba. In addition, Bermúdez proposed resuming technology exchange, noting that both sides have high potential for joint research, development, and production of medicines and cosmetic products. He invited St. Petersburg specialists to participate in scientific conferences on the island.

"The Vertex enterprise is a prime example of successful import substitution and innovative development in our pharmaceutical industry. The work of such companies confirms St. Petersburg’s status as a leading center of Russia's pharmaceutical industry. Company specialists help ensure access to quality healthcare for our citizens," noted Beglov.

According to him, the city actively supports such productions within the framework of the Special Economic Zone.

Representatives of Vertex held preliminary talks with their Cuban counterparts about cooperation in the production of vitamins, pregnancy tests, and other medical products. It is noted that the company operates a full production cycle, manufacturing more than 420 product types, including original combined drugs and import-substituting products.

It is worth recalling that since April 2020, Vertex has been included in the list of key enterprises of St. Petersburg and receives support from both the city and the federal government. More than 2,000 people work at the company, and its research divisions are engaged in the development of socially significant generics and new drug forms.

Currently, the pharmaceutical cluster of St. Petersburg unites 24 major enterprises producing over 460 types of medicines and active substances, half of which are classified as vital and essential medicines.
