SPLAT switches kids' toothpaste to recyclable packaging

Cosmetic

SPLAT launched its kids' toothpaste line in polyethylene-based recyclable packaging instead of non-recyclable ABL laminate at its Okulovka plant.

The brand SPLAT (part of SPLAT Global) has launched production of toothpaste in recyclable packaging at its own Organic Pharmaceuticals plant in Okulovka, Novgorod region. The company announced a gradual switch of all its brands in this category to the new tube format.

The new tube body material is a recyclable polyethylene-based laminate. It provides the same high level of product protection and stability as traditional non-recyclable ABL laminate.

"Since 2010 we have been constantly working to reduce waste at our own production and building an environmental management system to international standards. The move to the new recyclable packaging format was a logical continuation of our sustainable development strategy," said Svetlana Kopytina, Head of Ecology and Resource Saving at SPLAT Global.

Key technical solutions of the new packaging format:

  • the barrier layer is made of a polymer component whose content in the tube body is less than 5% under international flexible polymer packaging recyclability rules;
  • the material's higher protective properties allowed a thinner tube wall;
  • the ergonomic tube is easier to squeeze out, enabling almost complete use of the paste and simplifying recycling;
  • the wide cap ensures vertical storage of the product.

Work on the project has been underway since 2019: specialists studied more than 50 types of tubes. A manufacturer from Yekaterinburg was chosen as the new packaging supplier. Tests started in 2025 and entered the active phase with the first industrial material deliveries in February 2026.

To reduce the cost of products, the company moved kids' toothpaste production from semi-automatic to automatic lines, whose productivity is nearly 3 times higher (from 60 to 175 units/min) with the same number of staff. Investment in line modernization totaled about 3 million rubles, with format parts made at local enterprises.

The new kids' portfolio SPLAT "Detstvo" is built on age-based care stages: Baby (0+), Kids (2+) and Junior (6+) lines. The company stresses that investments in recyclable solutions should pay off not only commercially but also in terms of packaging life cycle, moving the whole industry toward common environmental goals.
