The FDA is tightening packaging rules for cosmetic products.

Cosmetic

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued new guidelines focused on packaging technologies and tamper-evident features for cosmetic products.

The FDA has released updated recommendations on packaging technologies and tamper-proof requirements for cosmetic products. This move aims to enhance product safety, prevent contamination, and ensure that cosmetic packaging complies with clear industry standards. Manufacturers are expected to adhere to these requirements as part of ongoing compliance with federal regulations.

According to the updated guidelines, cosmetic products should include tamper-evident features to alert consumers if the product has been opened or altered. This includes secure seals, breakaway caps, and other protective closures. The FDA emphasizes that tamper protection is a critical safety measure, especially for products used near the eyes, mouth, or on sensitive skin. Companies are encouraged to evaluate their current packaging designs and make necessary adjustments to meet these standards.

The FDA highlights several acceptable packaging technologies, including protective seals, shrink-wrap film, and multi-component closures designed to prevent contamination. Manufacturers are advised to use materials that maintain product integrity throughout the shelf life while also complying with regulatory labeling requirements. The guidelines state that packaging must be strong enough to prevent accidental damage during transportation, storage, or retail display.

Cosmetic manufacturers and retailers are responsible for ensuring that packaging meets the new tamper-proof requirements. The FDA may conduct inspections of facilities and packaging lines to confirm compliance, and non-compliance could result in warnings or product recalls. Companies exporting cosmetics to the U.S. must also ensure that imported products meet the same standards. The guidance provides a framework for consistent oversight and helps businesses protect consumer trust.
