Gerresheimer, a German company specializing in glass, specialty glass, and plastic packaging for the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food industries, announced the commissioning of a new plant in Zhenjiang, China, for the production of primary pharmaceutical glass containers and packaging.
After approximately four years of construction, a modern, energy-efficient building has been erected on an area of approximately 40,000 square meters in the Zhenjiang Economic Development Zone in Jiangsu Province. The facility fully complies with the strict regulatory requirements of the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. An additional space of over 33,000 square meters is available for future expansion. The new plant also sets standards in sustainability.
With this new construction, Gerresheimer is doubling its production capacity for primary packaging for injectables in China. Gerresheimer currently employs approximately 250 people at the facility, producing pharmaceutical vials and ampoules, primarily for the Chinese market. Approximately 50 new jobs are expected to be created in the coming years. By opening its fourth tubular glass plant in China, Gerresheimer continues its successful 20-year partnership with Shuangfeng Glass.
The new plant in Zhenjiang is equipped with state-of-the-art glass molding equipment, as well as intelligent, highly automated production and logistics systems. Borosilicate glass vials and ampoules are produced in a wide range of sizes and designs in accordance with Chinese Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards for pharmaceutical packaging. Controlled areas include over 2,700 m² of ISO Class 8 cleanrooms, an ISO Class 7 microbiology laboratory, and over 700 m² of ISO Class 8 ampoule and vial siliconization space. The plant also utilizes a comprehensive ISO-certified quality and environmental management system.
The plant was designed and built in accordance with Chinese "green factory" principles and the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Gold certification standards. A 2 MW rooftop photovoltaic system generates clean electricity that is used directly in the plant. Water, including rainwater and condensate from air conditioning systems, is continuously collected and recycled as a valuable resource. Heat generated during the production process is used to heat other areas. This energy and resource efficiency of the new plant, along with the use of electricity from renewable sources, makes a positive contribution to the Gerresheimer Group's sustainability goals.
